HAIR POROSITY TEST
Determining your hair's porosity is the key to having a good hair routine and discovering the moisture products that will work or not work on your hair. Today I will be sharing with you, all you need to know about hair porosity and how to take the test.
What is hair porosity?
This is the ability of your hair to take in moisture, water, color or any liquid. Although, it exists in three levels ~high, normal and low but we naturals categorize our tresses under high and low.
High porosity hair typically feels like sand paper, this is as a result of damages from chemical processing, rough treatment or environmental damage. Within an hour of applying a hydrating product, moisture escapes because the cuticles of the hair shaft are open making moisture not to stay in. I advise the use of leave-in conditioners, moisturizers and sealants like heavy hair butter.
However, low porosity hair resist the penetration of chemicals, it slowly absorbs moisture making products sit on the hair, this is because the cuticles of the hair shaft are tightly bound making moisture not to pass through. They are considered to be healthy and often shiny, they are prone to build-ups from protein-rich deep conditioning products and feels stiff and straw-like when you apply this products. Stick to protein-free daily conditioners, use honey or glycerin, use lighter liquid based products like hair milks.
How to take the test.
Take a strand of hair from your comb or brush and place into a glass of water, if it floats, its low, if it stays in the middle, its normal but if it sinks to the bottom, its high.
No matter were your strand is in this spectrum, knowing your porosity level is the key to streamlining a daily regime that's actually effective.
Wow, great job you are doing here. 😊👍
